About ANT COLONY and their EVOLUTION!
There are three types of ants:
Workers, Queen Ant, and Male Ant.
Ants have three main body parts: the head, thorax, and abdomen, also called the gaster. Inside the abdomen, along the very top of the body, is a long tube‑shaped heart that gently pumps their blood forward. Ants have no lungs; instead, they breathe through spiracles—tiny pores along their sides. Their jaws, called mandibles, open sideways like tiny scissors, and although adult ants cannot swallow solid food, they extract the liquid and share it with nestmates using their social stomach. Ants have two stomachs: one for their own nutrition and one for storing food to give to the colony. They use their antennae to sense their environment and communicate through pheromones, touch, and sound made by rubbing body parts together. Their bodies are covered by a protective exoskeleton that also helps them keep moisture inside, they walk on six jointed legs, and they see through compound eyes made of many small lenses.
Did you know that Ants have been living on earth dated back to dinosaur's days 170 million years ago, making them one of the oldest species!? Did you know that there are 10,000,000,000,000,000 (10 quadrillion!) ants and an estimated 12,500+ ant species today!? Did you know ants can carry weights up to 10–50 times their size! Ants are one big extended family. They are social insects because they live and work together in a colony. Everything that an ant does is for the good of the queen's ant and its colony.
They are the nursery that cares for the eggs, bring in the food, dig tunnels for rooms, defend their colony, and care for their mother, the queen ant! Workers come in a spectrum of sizes called minor, median, and major workers. The large worker ants, bigger than the minors and medians are called major workers, and they act like the colony’s “female soldier ants” because they help defend the nest and break apart tougher food. The queen releases special pheromones that keep all the workers sterile. When the queen dies, those pheromones disappear. In some species of ants, this loss of pheromones can activate one or a few workers, allowing them to lay eggs. These eggs are always unfertilized and can only grow into winged male ants, never workers and never queens. This means the colony slowly fade away and cannot continue without a queen.
When spring arrives and the weather becomes warm and humid, many ant species begin one of the most important events in their life cycle. This event is called a nuptial flight. During this time, colonies produce special ants with wings: young queens and males. These winged ants are called alates. The young queens and males leave their nests at the same time. They fly into the air to meet ants from other colonies of the same species. This helps prevent inbreeding and gives the new queens a better chance to find strong mates. The males have one purpose: to mate with a queen. After mating, the males die. A mated queen lands on the ground and removes her wings. This is the moment she becomes a founding queen. She searches for a safe place to start her new colony. If she successfully mated, she can lay fertilized eggs that grow into female worker ants and future queens and drones. If she did not mate, she can only lay unfertilized eggs, which become males and can sometime eventually pass away from starvation. Not all ant species follow the same pattern. Some species fly during the day, while others fly at night. A few species do not fly very far at all. Instead, they mate under the ground (example the Argentine Ant Linepithema humile) or even on top of their nest (Florida Harvester Ants) the male drones fly to the nest to mate before the queens take off. Even though different species have different habits, the purpose is always the same to spread out, start new colonies, and keep the species thriving. Nuptial flights are one of the most fascinating and important parts of an ant’s life cycle.

Ant eggs go through a four-stage life cycle: egg, larva (or ant grub), pupa, and then finally adult ant. The Egg stage stays in this egg form for 7 to 14 days, Larvae stage lasts 6 to 12 days; larvae eat food given by workers, the Pupae stage lasts 9 to 30 days before hatching into ants .
Queen ants can live anywhere from 5–20 years or longer, depending on the species. Some queens in captivity have even lived past 25 years. Worker ants can still live for months or even years without a queen ant, but the colony cannot grow anymore so they slowly fade away.
